Corrosion protection of metallic materials
Corrosion protection systems are applied to the surfaces of metallic materials of low corrosion resistance. The primary goal is to extend the fields of use of such materials to more corrosive environments. Possible uses will depend on the corrosion resistance that can be reached. As a side effect, the applied protection layers can serve aesthetic purposes (e.g. in terms of colour or structure).
Generally, a distinction is made between metallic coatings (plating), such as galvanisation, and organic coatings, such as multi-layer finishes. A combination of both is called 'duplex coating', where the finish is added on top of the plating. There are also composite coatings, usually made of metallic particles in an organic binder matrix, such as zinc-lamella coatings.
Furthermore, any kind of sheathing, such as tapes, films or tubes, can be taped, wrapped or pulled over the material as a corrosion protection system.
Regulatory framework
DIBt grants national technical approvals (abZ) for corrosion-protected products as long as the product
- is not covered or is not fully covered by a harmonised product standard
- deviates significantly from the Technical Building Rules (cf. MVV TB, in particular Chapter C 2) or
- neither Technical Building Rules nor generally recognised technical rules exist for the product.
European Technical Assessments (ETAs) can also be issued for these products.
DIBt grants general construction technique permits (aBG) for applications comprising these products for which there are no conclusive technical rules regarding design and execution.

Die Ausstellung einer Europäischen Technischen Bewertung (ETA) setzt das Vorhandensein eines unter den Europäischen Bewertungsstellen (TAB) abgestimmten Bewertungsdokuments (EAD) voraus. Sofern zum Zeitpunkt der Antragstellung für das geplante Bauprodukt noch kein oder ein nicht vollständig zutreffendes EAD veröffentlicht ist, kann das DIBt dieses im Rahmen der Antragsbearbeitung erstellen bzw. das bestehende entsprechend ergänzen. National procedure
A national technical approval (abZ) and/or oder general construction technique permit (aBG) is granted upon application (see Model Building Code (MBO), Sections 16a(2) and18(2) and (4)). This also applies to amendments and supplements to, or renewals of existing approvals and/or construction technique permits.
No formal requirements apply. The following information is needed: name and address of the applicant, description of the product and/or construction technique and its field of use or application, type of decision required (new decision, amendment or supplement to, or renewal of, an existing decision).

European Technical Assessment (ETA)
To start the ETA procedure, please submit the form below. We will then check if the prerequisites for issuing an ETA are met, i.e., in particular, if the product is not fully covered by an existing harmonised standard. If the prerequisites are met, we will check whether a European Assessment Document (EAD) covering the requested assessment scope already exists or still needs to be developed. If an EAD needs to be developed or amended, a complete technical file needs to be established before the procedure can begin.
