Expansion joints for road bridges

Expansion joints for road bridges are designed to accommodate movements between the bridge segment and bridge abutments. The dimensioning of the joints is derived from the required movement capacity and the various actions from loads and environmental conditions.

Regulatory framework

Bridge structures are primarily erected as part of public road construction projects. The related requirements are set out by the competent road engineering authorities or on behalf of them by the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt), see for example the 'Additional technical terms of contract and guidelines for engineering structures' (ZTV-ING) in conjunction with various technical delivery conditions and/or testing conditions (Technische Liefer- und Prüfbedingungen).

As a Technical Assessment Body, DIBt can issue European Technical Assessments (ETAs) for the corresponding construction products upon request.

Parts 1 and 2 of ETAG 032 are currently being converted in EADs. The ETAG can provisionally still be used as a basis for ETAs.

European Technical Assessment (ETA)

To start the ETA procedure, please submit the form below. We will then check if the prerequisites for issuing an ETA are met, i.e., in particular, if the product is not fully covered by an existing harmonised standard. If the prerequisites are met, we will check whether a European Assessment Document (EAD) covering the requested assessment scope already exists or still needs to be developed. If an EAD needs to be developed or amended, a complete technical file needs to be established before the procedure can begin.
