Special fittings for tanks for substances hazardous to water

Various construction products that serve as safety devices within the meaning of water legislation and contribute to preventing damage to water bodies are referred to as 'special fittings for tanks for substances hazardous to water'. They include valves that prevent unintentional or uncontrolled emptying of a tank through siphoning, pressure relief valves that prevent excessive, tank-damaging pressure and safety systems that prevent the escape of liquids hazardous to water in the event of flooding.

Regulatory framework

DIBt grants national technical approvals (abZ)/general construction technique permits (aBG) for these products and the corresponding applications (construction techniques), confirming that both the construction and the water law requirements have been met. The products and construction techniques are thus deemed to be suitable in accordance with Section 63 of the Water Resources Act (WHG).

National procedure

A national technical approval (abZ) and/or oder general construction technique permit (aBG) is granted upon application (see Model Building Code (MBO), Sections 16a(2) and18(2) and (4)). This also applies to amendments and supplements to, or renewals of existing approvals and/or construction technique permits.

No formal requirements apply. The following information is needed: name and address of the applicant, description of the product and/or construction technique and its field of use or application, type of decision required (new decision, amendment or supplement to, or renewal of, an existing decision).
